App Engine is a Platform as a Service (PaaS).

Using a PaaS enables us to deliver our product to the market faster, easily scale, focus on things other than maintenance, & leverage the security of the platform instead of having to manage it on our own.

Other similar service are Heroku, AWS's Elastic Beanstalk.
